Rotterdam Mainport Europe
Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and the most complete port worldwide. No other European port matches the transhipment figures for oil and chemical products, containers, iron ore, agricultural products, coal and food. The port is the gateway to a European market for 500 million consumers More than 60,000 people are employed in the port of Rotterdam itself, with another 250,000 outside the port. The direct gross added value of the port and industrial area is 9,900 million euros.
Rotterdam is of great importance for the European import and export market. A large proportion of the goods shipped in is processed in the port (oil refining, plastics production, combining of cargo loads). Outside Europe, too, Rotterdam Mainport Europe plays an important part in import and export, with the United States and the Far East being the most important intercontinental destinations.
The added value of the port of Rotterdam
The port of Rotterdam owes its title of Rotterdam Mainport Europe largely to its good accessibility via deep waterways (23 metres), its extensive infrastructure and the accessibility of terminals, companies and distribution centres. In addition, there is an enormous development in the field of e-commerce and the use of online information and communication services. This enables companies working in the Rotterdam port area to satisfy the requirements of port users to the full.
